Alan's student, Frenchie, drew this extremely flattering drawing of him. Thank you, Frenchie!

ALAN LAWRENCE
Comic Book Artist, Art Teacher, Illustrator,
Brand Strategist, Graphic Designer, Filmmaker, Pianist

-----------

A comic artist and an educator, amongst many other pursuits, Alan has taught Comic Book Illustration at ArtCenter's ACX Extension program (formerly ACN, or ArtCenter at Night) for the past six years. Over that time his students have come from all over the globe, and many of them have gone on to self-publish comics and zines, and to attend art programs at exceptional universities. And a whole lot of them seem to have found a greater sense of fulfillment in life in general, being able to communicate their creative passion by drawing comic stories large and small–which is really the best part about it all. For ArtCenter's Extension program Alan has also taught Comic Book Illustration for Teens, Character Design for Animation, Figure Drawing, Illustration, and Advanced Comic Book Creation–a class that he originated.

Alan has worked in a a wide variety of visual storytelling mediums, including film production, storyboards, cgi effects work, strategic branding and regular, vanilla-flavored graphic design. He has a bachelor's degree in Fiction Writing from the University of Southern California, a design certification from UCLA Extension, and a California State teaching credential. His clients for creative work have included Hyatt, Rosewood, and Hilton hotel brands, Taiwanese pop star Joanna Wang, Green Street Los Angeles, East West Players, the Aratani Theater, the Pasadena Symphony, Pasadena Dance Theatre, Project by Project, Yannix Technologies, the Korean Youth + Community Center, and many others. His work has appeared in films like The One, Eight-Legged Freaks, and Driven, as well as the television show Mad Men, music videos for two of Joanna Wang's albums, and in award-winning short films.

Besides all this, he has also held a host of some of the least-popular jobs in America, from substitute teaching to valeting parties, from playing piano for weddings, birthdays, school presentations, musicals, ballet classes, and wakes,  to selling knives door-to-door, to participating in scientific research with a chimpanzee pal. Experience fuel for crazy stories to come, perhaps? But teaching art and making comics is the work that really makes him smile.
